The Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary's aim is to prevent the suffering of donkeys worldwide through the provision of high quality, professional advice, training and support on donkey welfare. In the UK and Ireland permanent sanctuary is provided to any donkey in need of refuge.

Due to the inevitable wastage factor inherent in breeding and training thoroughbred horses for racing, in the region of 5,000 horses leave the racing industry annually. Whilst some filter down through other equestrian fields, many end up in the downward spiral of the saleroom where there is no control over their destination. It is not only the mediocre or failed racehorse that finds itself in this position - professional, prizewinning racehorses can also confront this fate when their ability to race has diminished. This is often an ignominious end to a hard working career in the service of sport and entertainment. The Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre is the original charity dedicated to rehabilitating and rehoming thoroughbred racehorses.
